Blackbook Chronicals / Chapter and Verse presents emerging artists Ennis Martin and Lewis Taylor as they join resident artist Richard Shipps in exploring a post-apocalyptic earth, graffiti in an unconventional configuration and an ever evolving narrative of cut paper. Ennis Martin, illustrator and Chicago native, has been part of the local art and hip-hop scenes in excess of 20 years. The body of work he has compiled for this exhibition is based on his forth-coming graphic novel The Blackbook Chronicles, a survey of post-apocalyptic earth in which aliens have returned to implement its reconstruction based upon mere remnants of Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species. Coined by Martin as "children's book for adults", his imagery incorporates the elements of both the ominous and the innocent. Lewis Taylor, Chicago based artist and BFA recipient from Virginia Commonwealth University, is a process oriented abstract artist whose intention is to empower his viewers to create their own narrative. His approach is with no preconceived notion and his heavy black outlines and layers of bright colors transition between text-based form and zoomorphic image. Taylor, a prolific street artist and graffiti writer, currently has work in the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and The Free Street Theatre. Resident artist Richard Shipps explores the ambiguity of form, pattern and movement through cut paper, plastics and steel. His work examines the dynamic tensions between light and shadow and the interplay of negative and positive shapes. Working with families of shapes in large abstract panels, his work references many aspects of modernist discipline. |
