E!X!HiBiTiON! presents three artists, featuring the new abstract expressionist paintings of Janice Elkins, the minimalist work of Serene Wise and the abstract cut paper art of Richard Shipps. Janice Elkins' work has a special energy and spontaneity combined with a defining thoughtfulness. She immerses herself in the work and becomes the vehicle (consciously and unconsciously) for expressing personal and universal images. She presents a group of recent paintings in a limited palette of blacks and grays and another group in vibrant color. The work of Serene Wise is influenced by a long line of minimalist practitioners from Josef Albers to Daniel Buren to Ian Davenport. Her paintings are line studies — studies in the linear geometry of visual rhythms. The paintings are designed in series and each series becomes a self- generating exploration of a defined visual rhythm. These pieces are an Homage to French minimalist Daniel Buren. Richard Shipps brings more offerings from his rapidly evolving vocabulary of cut paper works, focusing on a collection of obscure shapes to tell larger stories in explorations of form. His imagery is revealed within the spaces, shadows and shapes we rarely see, but look at every day. |
